Shipping Secret
zulily has an … interesting… shipping policy. The rule is that after you place an order, they will offer you free shipping on all orders placed within the same calendar day. The thought behind it is that they want you to purchase a deal you find before it sells out, but then want you to come back and continue shopping the rest of the day. It’s a nice concept and one that offers the buyer a $ advantage if used properly.
I’ll give you a real-life example of me from yesterday. I wanted to buy new leotards for my daughter and a pair of cute doll/kid PJs. One of them was $9.99, one $13.99, and one $14.99. If I add all of these to my cart and checked out, the shipping charge was $7.95. However, if I added only one of those item – The $9.99 leotard, my shipping cost was $5.95 and I would receive free shipping on every other order until the end of the day.
So, what did I do?
I ordered the $9.99 leotard with $5.95 shipping. Then I immediately went back and ordered the other two items. This time with free shipping. So, I saved $2 on shipping.
This method can be used for even bigger savings if you are ordering higher priced items. zulily has a formula that calculates shipping at anywhere from $5.95 – $10.95 for a given item. (I have no idea what the formula is. It’s not based on price). So:
- find the item in your shopping cart that will ship for the least amount
- move all of the other items in your cart to the “save for later” area
- purchase the item that is still in your cart – Earn free shipping for the rest of the day
- purchase the remaining items using your free shipping
The nice part too is that the items will all ship together as part of their “Consolidated Shipping” policy. So, if you are like me and worry about all of the extra packaging/effort that goes into shipping Amazon orders separately, don’t worry!
Check out zulily and use this trick to save $2-$5 on shipping, in addition to the already great savings on their site.
